Using Restylane and Radiesse to Add Volume in the Cheek Area
The aging face is an incredible thing. Few of us want to age naturally. With all the advancements in technology there is little reason why we can’t do a little something to help us look younger. One of the most popular procedures performed is adding volume to the cheeks using fillers like Radiesse and Restylane.
Radiesse vs Restylane
Radiesse and Restylane are very different products. Radiesse is one of the thickest products we have made from calcium hydroxide. Your body recognizes it as natural because is breaks down to calcium, hydrogen and oxygen. Several research studies have shown this product to help in collagen stimulation over time. Therefore, there is a long-term benefit that lasts beyond the life of the product.
Radiesse products add the most volume so they are ideal for patients with moderate to severe volume loss or those with thicker skin. Radiesse tends to last anywhere from 9 – 12 months. However, this product works best when placed at the initial appointment and a touch up done again, one to three months later. This method helps take advantage of the collagen stimulation, making the second treatment exponentially more beneficial than the first.
Restylane has a line of products for different indications. The most ideal product for adding volume to the cheek is Restylane Lyft. Lyft is the thickest of the Restylane products. As the name implies, its function is to lift the tissues and add volume where it has been lost due to aging.
Restylane Lyft also lasts about 9 – 12 months but requires more volume initially to get full correction. The active ingredient in Lyft is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is very hydrophilic meaning it attracts 1000 times its weight in water. This creates a beautiful plumping effect that looks very youthful and natural.
The Aging Face
As we age, our bones get smaller. This causes a loss of support causing our skin to sag or droop. In addition to the bone loss, we also loose fat around the face. Between the muscle and the bone there are fat pads. These fat pads help support the overlying skin. As we age we lose a percentage of these fat pads which also contributes to the saggy and droopy skin. In fact, we lose one percent of this fat every year after age 30. Therefore, already by our early to mid-thirties, we should start doing things to slow the aging process.
Don’t wait till there is a problem to treat it. Doing a few treatments throughout the year will help keep you looking young and beautiful. Your friends will wonder why you always look the same and you never age. That’s a great compliment!
