Gum Reduction Procedure

Gingivectomy often is done simply to make gums look better. The gums may have an unusual shape or may not be formed normally. The causes can include a person’s genetics, disease or trauma. The laser gum surgery procedure reshapes the gums to make them look more natural.

Before your Biscayne Dental & Facial Aesthetics appointment, you should receive a thorough cleaning to remove any bacteria or tartar around the teeth. The gum contouring procedure does not hurt. On the day of the procedure, Top Miami dentist Dr. Hernandez will use a small amount of local anesthetic to numb the gums. The laser is used in these procedures to help cut and cauterize the tissues at the same time. With laser gum surgery, Dr. Julio Hernandez can be far more precise allowing a more esthetic result. The procedure usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes and is relatively painless.

For gummy smiles that require more than simple gum recontouring, a procedure called crown lengthening is performed. Crown lengthening is done by our in-house periodontist, Dr. Corzo. This procedure requires a minimal reduction of gum and bone around the teeth. Although this procedure takes slightly longer to perform and requires sutures, the post-treatment discomfort is minimal and can be easily managed with prescription analgesics.

Care Instructions After Laser Gum Surgery

After the procedure, Biscayne Dental & Facial Aesthetics may give you prescriptions for pain medications and an antiseptic mouthwash. Post-treatment discomfort is usually minimal and lasts only a few hours to 1 to 2 days.

It is important that you follow our dentist’s recommendations and avoid spicy or acidic foods during the first week following the gum reduction procedure and maintain good oral hygiene.
