What to Do if Your Skin Got Too Much Sun this Summer

|

To anyone who’s ever forgotten their sunscreen before they hit the beach and came home looking like a boiled lobster: don’t panic. While the hazards of sun exposure—or over-exposure–are very real, there are treatments that can mitigate the effects of too much sun even after the fact. Instead of treating merely redness and peeling, these treatments address the deeper cellular damage that’s the hallmark of UV exposure.

Treatment: Intense Pulse Light Photofacial (IPL)

An IPL treatment is used to correct hyperpigmentation of the skin, age lines, redness and treating small, visible blood vessels that can mar the complexion. IPL is a rejuvenating sun damage treatment, which uses intense pulses of light to reach the deep layers of the skin to treat damaged areas.

Treatment: PCA Oxygenation

One of the biggest hazards of too much sun is free radical damage. Free radicals don’t just destroy collagen–creating facial lines and loss of skin elasticity—but damage the very DNA of cells. This speeds up the aging process and leads to many of the effects we associate with too much sun.

PCA oxygenation helps prevent and even correct free radical damage, resulting in radiant skin that lasts up to ten days. This three-step treatment helps skin to heal from the inside, drawing oxygen to the surface and binding moisture molecules to the tissues for more youthful skin.

Treatment: VI Peel

This is a medical-grade chemical peel, intended to treat a variety of skin conditions including fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture or tone, freckles or age spots and even sagging skin. It can also assist in the removal of precancerous cells resulting from UV exposure. With regular treatment every four to six weeks and home care in the interim; the VI Peel can help to reverse the effects of sun damage.

Treatment: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP harnesses the power of the human body to heal itself naturally. Widely used in sports medicine, PRP is emerging as an effective treatment that repairs and strengthens skin, regenerating tissue and boosting collagen production to turn back the clock on sun damage. And it’s all made possible by using components made by the body. Platelets and plasma from the blood are reintroduced into problem areas, where they stimulate the skin to heal and rejuvenate itself.

Treatment: Dermalpen

The Dermalpen treatment, like PRP, uses the body’s innate healing capacity to achieve its goal. The effect is similar to that of fractional laser sun damage treatment, but rather than lasers it uses microneedles to pierce the skin and prompt the body to action. Dermalpen treatments can improve not just the appearance of sun-damaged skin but also scars, smoker’s lines and even acne.
