Get Answers to Your Questions

  • How do I reduce the symptoms of menopause?
Early signs of menopause may include hot flashes, dryness, depression and fatigue caused from reduced hormone production. Treatment includes dietary changes and exercise along with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Bioidentical hormones are far superior to synthetic hormones usually administered because they typically cause fewer side effects and will significantly help reduce the symptoms of menopause.
  • What can I do to prevent wrinkles?
Wrinkles are caused primarily from a breakdown of collagen. Therefore, preventing collagen breakdown is the most effective treatment for wrinkles. Prevention is best obtained by reducing sun exposure, reducing stress, eating a well-balanced diet, and doing low-impact exercise. Dietary supplements and foods high in Vitamin A will help stimulate new collagen. Also, an effective skin care regimen combined with professional treatments can help initiate collagen synthesis and keep the skin looking and feeling smooth.
  • How does nutrition affect the health of my skin?
When it comes to skin care, antioxidants can help protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lycopene, selenium and vitamins A,C, and E can protect your skin from the inside out by guarding the skin cells from damage. These antioxidants can be found in certain foods or taken as supplements daily.
  • Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding is a sign of inflammation. The inflammation is caused from bacteria that build up as plaque between the teeth. Gums should NEVER bleed when brushing. Treatment requires effective brushing and flossing to remove food and plaque. In addition, regular visits to the hygienist will assure you maintain the health of your teeth and gums for years to come.
  • Is my heartburn making my teeth sensitive?
As stomach acids creep up your esophagus they cause heartburn or acid reflux. Over time, these acids can demineralize the enamel making teeth sensitive. Treatment requires first restoring the teeth and using a remineralization toothpaste followed by a heartburn treatment. Traditional heartburn treatments use antacids which only mask the problem but don’t address the cause. A simple breath test and/or supplements plus diet modification can significantly help eliminate heartburn.
  • What to do if there are problems with braces and retainers?
If a wire is causing irritation, cover the end with a small cotton ball, beeswax or a piece of gauze until you can get to our office. If a wire gets stuck in the cheek, tongue or gum tissue, do not attempt to remove it. Contact our office immediately. If an appliance becomes loose or a piece of it breaks off, contact our office.
  • What to do if you have a toothache?
Gently rinse the mouth out with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to ensure that there is no food or other debris caught between the teeth. Never put aspirin or any other pain killer against the gums near the aching tooth because it may burn the gum tissue. If the pain persists, contact our office.
  • What to do if you have a broken tooth?
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use cold compresses on the area to keep any swelling down. Call our office immediately.
  • How does pregnancy affect my oral health?
Recent research indicates that poor oral health can contribute to pre-term delivery and/or a low birth weight of the baby. Women should discuss oral health issues with their physician and/or dentist. Basic dental health concerns during pregnancy include: Need for additional calcium Important to ensure optimum oral health Brushing and flossing more carefully and frequently.
  • What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are third molars and people generally have three permanent molars in the upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left areas of the mouth. The first molars “grow” at about age 6, the second around age 12 and the third around ages 18-20 – a maturation time when people are considered to be wiser, hence the name.
