Bacteria can start to build up on even the cleanest of teeth. When it comes to oral health, the only way to prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease is to clean and protect the teeth and gums regularly. With proper care and scheduled visits to the dentist, kids and adults can keep their gums clean and their teeth white for years to come.
What Is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a common condition in which gums become inflamed and begin to bleed. It is caused by a thin film of bacteria that builds up over time. Also known as plaque, the film can build up to the point where it causes increased irritation to the gums. As the gums become more sensitive, they can start to bleed and, in severe cases, become abscessed or infected. This can eventually lead to gum erosion and even the loss of teeth. It can be prevented, however, with regular dental check-ups and proper oral health care daily.
What Are the Most Common Causes of Gingivitis?
Many things can cause gingivitis and other types of gum disease. The most common is the build-up of bacteria which covers the teeth and irritates the gums. A few of the most common catalysts for gingivitis include:
- Not brushing before bedtime
- Allowing infants and toddlers to fall asleep with a bottle full of juice or milk
- Poor diet and lack of proper nutrition
- Certain medications
- Medical conditions
During a dental exam, the dentist and hygienist may be able to shine some light on what may be causing your symptoms.
How Can Gum Disease Be Prevented?
Gum disease is easily prevented if you know how to properly care for your teeth. Brushing and flossing every day, especially after eating foods that are sweet or sticky, can help reverse gum issues and keep the mouth healthy. Rinsing the mouth with a mouthwash that is approved by the American Dental Association is also an excellent way to reduce plaque build-up.
It is wise to use a toothbrush with soft bristles to prevent tooth abrasion. Patience is truly a virtue when it comes to brushing, as it is extremely important to reach every tooth. Many dentists recommend spending about two minutes brushing every morning and night.
